What Is An SR22?
An SR-22 is an insurance document that shows proof of financial responsibility and verification of insurance coverage. The license bureau may require you to provide an SR-22 in addition to your car insurance if you drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, drive without insurance, have multiple moving violations, or are involved in a motor vehicle accident without insurance.
If your driver license is suspended, you may need to file an SR22 with the State where your license is suspended and possibly in your home State to get your driver license reinstated. You may be required to carry an SR22 for one year or longer, depending on your violation history. You must maintain your SR22 insurance policy during that requirement period or risk license suspension.
Bargain Insurance Connection can help you file the SR22 with the DMV. If you are not eligible yet to get your license reinstated, we can help you apply for a Hardship license, as long as you are eligible to obtain one.
What is a Hardship License?
Hardship license, also known as Limited Driving Privilege (LDP), allows you to drive on a limited basis while your license is suspended/revoked. Your driving privilege is limited to your work place, education, court dates, your bank, gas station and any place you have to visit on a frequent basis. You must list each location on the hardship application. If you are eligible to get the hardship license, usually you have to get an SR22 insurance policy, possibly get an ignition interlock installed on your vehicle and/or complete the SATOP class. You have to keep you hardship license until the date you are eligible to reinstate your license.
Keep in mind, even after you reinstate the license you may be required to maintain your SR22 for another year or more in order to keep your license valid.
Bargain Insurance Connection can file the SR22 for you and help you file the hardship application. Just call one of our friendly agents at 816.453.7722 or fill out our online form.
Non-Owners SR22:
Non-owner insurance is a basic liability coverage on the driver. This is required if you need an SR22, but don’t own any vehicles. Non-owner insurance provides liability coverage to vehicles you drive, but don’t own. There are limitations to a non-owner policy – coverage does not apply to vehicles that you have regular access to (i.e vehicles where the owner is in the same household) or if you are given access to a vehicle to drive every day. In those cases, it’s best that you are added to the owners insurance policy.
Should you borrow a vehicle and you get into an accident, the vehicle owners insurance would be the primary insurance policy that would pay for the damage, your non-owner policy can provide excess limits if the owners policy liability limits are exceeded. After you buy your own vehicle, you can add it to your non-owners policy and it becomes a regular auto insurance policy. Ask your insurance agent for details to make sure you are covered.
How to Get SR22 Insurance
States have different regulations regarding SR22 insurance. Generally, you will first need to secure auto coverage in accordance with the applicable laws. Then, the SR22 form typically needs to be filed with the appropriate state governmental office (e.g., Kansas Department of Revenue or Missouri Department of Revenue). The agents at Bargain Insurance Connection can assist you in obtaining the necessary insurance and in completing/submitting the SR22 form. Contact us for more information.
We also offer Non-Owners policies without an SR22.
